I've been a CPA in South Florida for over twenty-five years. Seventy-five percent of my business is commercial accounts. I typically do tax preparation and financial statement compilations and reviews.
I operate out of a home office just like many of my clients. It has its good points and its bad points, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. These days, so much of my business is conducted electronically that my virtual office/home office works just as well as a storefront.
Computers are absolutely mandatory for accountants and I've been committed to technology since the late 1980s. I run a paperless office with triple backup systems and operate using the latest technology available to assist in running a half a dozen programs at once on my desktop.
Free advice: Make the transition from faxing to scanning. Get a good sheet-fed scanner and go paperless. I find it so much easier to find a document on my computer than to lay my hands on a piece of paper buried under a stack of other papers. Backup using at least a reliable online service. They're cheap, automatic and offsite.
